Freedom bouncing through the streets
After Foundland’s show at Impakt Festival we now have thousands of ping pong balls with ‘haria’ written on them, meaning ‘freedom’. The same balls have been bouncing through the streets of Syrian cities spreading the word, without violating the ban on banners.
After the show, we’re sure, these balls will find their way to more uses.
50% Synthetics
Persil used to advertise with the slogan ‘Washes Whiter’ and now advertises with ‘Dirt is Good’. In his book on semiotics Chandler notes that in so doing they have turned the role of nature from evil to good. It is not unlikely we’ll see a future washing powder commercial with the slogan ‘Washes Dirty’.
Interview with Electric Literature
Halimah Marcus: Electric Literature is a quarterly anthology of short fiction. Each issue provides a “cover to cover” reading experience of five great stories that grab you and take you somewhere unexpected. Other than our content, what distinguishes us is that we’ve embraced the digital publishing revolution. Our mission is to use new media and innovative distribution to return the short story to a place of prominence in popular culture, which means you can read Electric Literature every possible way: in paperback, on your phone, your eReader, or your computer.
We also commission animations for every story we publish. The author chooses a favorite sentence from his or her story and an animator brings it to life. We call them Single Sentence Animations. You can view them all on our website, www.electricliterature.com.
Wishful thinking
Some people have to visit every church they see. The nicest superstitions can be found inside: oil drops on foreheads, tiny strings of rope around wrists, shiny bronze toes, altars full of wish candles etcetera. Apparently Niels Bohr once said: “I have been told that it also works if you don’t believe in it”. I’d like to add, that a good clergyman can tell what the wish was for. I find it comforting to know, that he will dispose of all the wishes.
Wanderlust Forever
Immer Fernweh, “das Künstlerleben der Johanna Kaiser”, de nieuwe Duitstalige documentaire van Peter Delpeut, beleeft 19 oktober zijn wereldpremière op het internationale documentairefestival Dok Leipzig.
Immer Fernweh schetst het portret van de weinig bekende Duitse kunstenares Johanna Kaiser (1912-1991), in de jaren tachtig ontdekt door Carel Blotkamp, emeritus hoogleraar kunstgeschiedenis. Hij stelde tentoonstellingen van haar werk samen voor het Chabot Museum in Rotterdam en het S.M.A.K. in Gent. Peter Delpeut werd getroffen door de hartstochtelijke schilderijen en wil met zijn film Johanna Kaiser voor de vergetelheid behoeden.
Een belangrijke rol in de film is weggelegd voor bewegende teksten in beeld. Uitspraken en citaten die net zo lief gezien als gelezen mogen worden.
